As many of you know, Johannes and I live car-free. It is relatively easy to do with the great public transportation & cycling infrastructure in Europe, but the opportunity to pick up our rental car 1 day early provided us a great chance to see some of the places we just hadn't gone yet. The day before my parents were due at the Vienna Airport, we packed up the rental and headed East to Rust, Austria where we camped for the night. For dinner we walked on an abandoned road into Hungary and dined at a cute little restaurant owned by a tiny Hungarian woman. After dinner and some great wine we headed back to camp. The next morning we packed up and drove Northeast into Slovakia, where we did a quick tour of the city of Bratislava before heading back West to get my parents from the airport. It still amazes me how close things are here in Europe. Within 12 hours we had been in 3 countries!
