Today we headed to Johannes' hometown of Hartberg for their annual 'Winzerfest'. The day began by getting dressed up in traditional Austrian tracht and heading to the city center for a small parade of tractors and wagons of seasonal produce and an outdoor church service. The city square was packed and almost everyone was standing. As soon as mass was over, all of the wooden stands and booths setup around the edges of the square opened up and the wine drinking commenced! Most stands also served the seasonal specialty known as 'Sturm'- which is partially fermented wine that you can only get this time of year. It's sweeter and cloudier than normal wine (which it would have eventually turn into, had it not been scooped out of the fermenting tanks and served to us!).
