After arriving in Hamburg, Germany- heading to Flensburg to spend New Years with our friends Tim and Katie, we celebrated with a party and huge "Silvester" (New Years Eve) feast.
The next day we were exhausted so we just stayed around the house, slept played games and ate.
We spent another day touring the town and going out for dinner. The next afternoon, Johannes and I took a train back to Hamburg to begin our journey back home. The photo below is a typical Northern Germany city taken out our train window. The homes look much different than the homes in Austria, and much more similar to the older homes in Wisconsin made of brick.
We had 4 hours before our night train to Austria would leave, so we locked our luggage at the train station and wandered around Hamburg for a few hours.
Luckily there were city maps everywhere so we were able to easily find sights like the Rathaus, historic churches, etc.
The picture below is one of the city streets still decorated for Christmas. It was one of the main pedestrian areas and main shopping streets.
We also walked around a "Gallery" or shopping mall. The mall in Europe aren't wide like in the US, but most have 4 or more stories of shops.
Before we were finally about to board our train, we stopped a small stand in the train station to eat Currywurst- sliced sausages in mild curry sauce with seasoning and eaten along with bread.
And I don't think I mentioned in any previous posts, but one of the oddest differences between the US and Europe...you have to pay to use public restrooms- whether it be in a store, in a mall, or in a train station. It costs between ,50-,70E and either a person is working there collecting the money, or you have to put it into a machine that allows the door to open. The advantage of this system, however weird it may seem, is that the bathrooms are always clean and usually much nicer that those publics restrooms in the US.
